2013 Toyota Avalon is a safe bet, adds blind spot and rear traffic alert systems
True to their slogan, Toyota truly is "moving forward" with the completely redesigned 2013 Avalon. Both its sleek and modern exterior and its lush, leather interior make the Avalon seem like a whole new car. In addition to being an affordable luxury car featuring power and heated ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, top-of the line navigation, touch-sensitive IntelliTouch switches and more, the 2013 Avalon safety features are nothing to scoff at. Here we will take a closer look at how the 2013 Avalon safety ratings stack up with other models for the new year.
Safety Features You Can Count On
With safety being one of the most important aspects for consumers who are in the market for a new vehicle, Toyota has upped their game with all-new and greatly improved safety technology. Paired with all of the top-of-the-line cosmetic and technical upgrades, you may find it difficult to recognize the new Avalon from its predecessors at all!
Crafted entirely in North America, you can count on the fact that the latest Avalon will allow you to drive in style while remaining fully protected. In fact, according to some expert reviews, this vehicle is quickly shaping up to be one of the safest sedans on today's market. Here's what you can expect:
• The Old Standbys - In addition to all of the new safety technologies incorporated into the latest Toyota Avalon, you can count on all of the standard features to protect you. These features include electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes featuring Brake Assist, Smart Stop brake-override systems, airbags (10 total airbags are featured in the 2013 Avalon which include driver and front passenger knee bags as well as rear outboard bags that are mounted in the seats).
• Rear Cross Traffic Alert System - Usually reserved for the "true" luxury-brand cars, the 2013 Avalon is one of the few sedans that feature this innovative piece of safety technology. By utilizing sensors in the rear quarter panels, the Rear Cross Traffic Alert system is able to quickly detect vehicles that may be approaching from either the side or the rear of the vehicle. This proves to be especially helpful for backing out of driveways with obstructed views or out of tight spaces in busy parking garages. In addition, with the exception of the Avalon XLE, these vehicles feature a backup camera to further simplify the process.
• Blind Spot Monitor - The process of changing lanes is made safer and easier with the Blind Spot Monitor which is standard in the 2013 Avalon. You will be alerted with both a screen warning and a beep if another vehicle is in your blind spot. This monitor works to sense all autos bigger than 125-cc motorcycles that are moving at speeds greater than 10 mph and speed differentials less than 27 mph in order to minimize false signals.
2013 Avalon Safety: The Bottom Line
Although the newest Avalon has yet to be crash tested by either of the U.S. agencies, its many safety features, both new and old, are making it quickly stand out as one of the most potentially safe and reliable vehicles on the 2013 market. From what experts can tell, the Avalon is constructed in a manner that is highly comparable to both the 2013 Toyota Camry as well as the 2013 Lexus ES 350 which have both received top rate safety ratings and have each earned the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick awards. Because these vehicles share a similar build, some experts feel that the 2013 Avalon will also receive top safety ratings once it has been crash tested.

Toyota and Cincinnati Children’s to Donate 10,000 Child Car Seats to Families In Need as Part of Child Passenger Safety Education Campaign
Did you know that three out of every four child car seats in the United States are not used or installed correctly? Or that almost 50 percent of children who are fatally injured in motor vehicle crashes were unrestrained? To address this alarming public health issue and encourage greater safety for child passengers, Toyota and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center have teamed up to launch a national, online education campaign on Causes.com.
The campaign – at www.Causes.com/Toyota – invites people to take action online:
- Watch a short video with tips to properly install a child car seat
- Share the video with your friends and family
The campaign builds on the success of Toyota’s and Cincinnati Children’s groundbreaking Buckle Up for Life child safety program in communities.
In recognition of everyone who participates in the campaign, Toyota will donate 10,000 child car seats to families in need.
“While cars and trucks today are safer than they’ve ever been, motor vehicle crashes are still the leading cause of death in the United States for children between the ages of one and 12,” said Patricia Salas Pineda, group vice president of National Philanthropy and the Toyota USA Foundation at Toyota Motor North America. “Tragically, so many of these deaths and injuries could be avoided through the proper use of child car seats and seat belts. We are pleased to be working with the visionary medical experts at Cincinnati Children’s to help empower parents and caregivers to make an even bigger difference in protecting young passengers, while also bringing thousands of new child car seats to families in need.”
“The goal of our partnership with Toyota has been to help keep as many children safe as possible and to educate families on the importance of properly buckling children up during every ride,” said Dr. Victor Garcia, founding director of Trauma Services at Cincinnati Children’s, professor of pediatric surgery and a co-founder of Buckle Up for Life. “The campaign on Causes.com expands our ability to fulfill this vital mission and to reach even more people across America with information that saves lives.”
Toyota and Causes will host a live Twitter chat to help parents learn valuable tips about child passenger safety. The event will start on Jan. 22 at 2:00 p.m., ET, with certified child passenger safety technicians from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. The technicians will be available to answer questions, in English and Spanish, about proper car seat installation and other ways to keep child passengers safe. The chat will be hosted by Corinne McDermott, family travel expert, Huffington Post contributor, and founder of Have Baby Will Travel, a leading website offering travel tips for busy parents, which regularly addresses child safety issues. Follow @Toyota and @causes and learn some great tips on how you can #BuckleUpforLife.

Weird Ways to Freshen Your Car
- Pour fragrant bath salts into a loose-leaf tea strainer, and place it in the glove compartment for a fast refresher every time you pull out the map.
- Drop a potpourri wax tart— commonly made by candle companies—into a cup holder, and take your favorite scent with you wherever you go.
- Lay fresh herbs, such as basil, on a piece of newspaper in the backseat and leave the windows rolled up to dry the leaves and banish bad odors.
- Shake a few drops of lemon or eucalyptus essential oil onto car mats for a naturally sweet scent that will last a few weeks.

Toyota rolls out Furia concept for Corolla at Detroit Auto Show
Of all the automakers trying to generate buzz on the Detroit auto show's first day, Toyota Motor Co. made the most noise.
The company rolled out a concept design for the Corolla, one of its most important models, and announced preliminary sales figures showing that it has regained the title of world's largest automaker from General Motors Co.
Called the Furia, the new-concept Corolla, with its severely raked windshield and bulging fenders, marks a radical departure from the past and signals a wider effort by Toyota to shed its conservative image and make cars that ignite consumer passion.
"Iconic dynamism" is how the automaker describes the design language of the Furia concept. How much of that dynamism makes its way into the production model remains to be seen. Toyota offered no details on plans for horsepower, torque and handling capabilities. Nor did the company say when the next Corolla will hit the street.
Whenever it arrives, the car will have a huge effect on Toyota's future bottom line and its reputation in a hot and growing segment, analysts said.
"This car is very important to Toyota," said Jessica Caldwell, an analyst with auto information company Edmunds.com. "With the explosion of subcompact cars in the past few years, coupled with the demise of large cars, compact cars suddenly find themselves as the 'middle size' for American consumers."
The more aggressive design philosophy applies across the company, said Mark Templin, the global product and marketing manager for the automaker's Lexus division. Toyota isn't so much chasing volume as it is trying to design compelling cars, he said. His marching orders from Chief Executive Akio Toyoda are to "build cars that are fun to drive."
"Akio expects us to change the way the company behaves," Templin said. "He wants us to show the rest of the company how we can move fast, how we can make quicker decisions, take risks. He expects us to have fantastic design and great driving dynamics."
Toyota executives say both the RAV4 and the Corolla concept unveiled Monday embody the automaker's desire to push the envelope. Though some concepts bear no resemblance to production cars, Toyota says the Corolla Furia "hints at the styling cues consumers can expect to see in the next Corolla."
Bill Fay, Toyota's group vice president and general manager, acknowledged in a statement that the Furia design study "will surprise a lot of people."

Toyota joins with Total Traffic Network to bring real-time updates right to your dashboard!
Toyota to provide real-time dashboard traffic, weather updates
Clear Channel’s Total Traffic Network and Toyota have teamed up to give drivers real-time traffic and weather updates on their dashboard.
In a three-year deal, Total Traffic Network, a subsidiary of Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, will work with Toyota in order to relay real-time updates of both traffic and weather conditions straight to a driver’s dashboard via HD radio technology.
Announced at 2013’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES), the deal means that a number of 2013 Toyota and Lexus models will have the feature as standard on their dashboard, which will show updates through both text and graphics.
The new in-dashboard services will include The Weather Channel’s Doppler weather radar, as well as real-time weather forecasts from TTN’s traffic updates. In addition, both local and national forecasts will be available for over 120 cities in the U.S., according to Toyota.
Traffic updates will be provided through maps and incident coverage reports which are updated every two minutes, as well as upcoming 15, 30 and 45-minute predictive traffic information.
Both services will be provided for free to customers. Toyota also plans to eventually expand the service coverage beyond HD radio, and make the service accessible for vehicles equipped with Entune by connection to a driver’s smartphone.
Kevin Dorsey, President of National Media Groups for Clear Channel Media and Entertainment commented:
“This new agreement with Toyota highlights our ability to leverage our distribution, programming and technology platforms to bring consumers what they want, where they want it and without annoying subscriptions. Our digital expertise helps to provide one-of-a-kind solutions for our partners and we are looking forward to joining forces with Toyota to further enhance the driving experience.”
